Position Purpose:
To assist the Train Driver in the safe and efficient operation of various types of trains (airbrake, vacuum, high-speed, heavy haul, and passenger) to ensure timely and undamaged delivery of cargo, meeting customer and organizational needs.

Position Outputs:

Sign on duty:

Determine locomotive preparation.

Obtain and place necessary equipment.

Clean and prepare the working area.

Assist with locomotive startup and brake tests.

Couple locomotives and dispatch as required.

Prepare locomotives:

Check and supplement equipment.

Assist with startup and brake tests.

Prepare communication equipment:

Obtain and test radios/handsets/telemeters.

Pre-trip preparation:

Attach/detach vehicles as per work order.

Mount telemeters, complete vehicle lists, and conduct brake tests.

Execute shunting activities:

Follow work orders for placing/removing trucks.

Update vehicle lists and manage siding operations.

Assist the Train Driver enroute:

Monitor signals and train movements.

Reset trip outs, protect the train during incidents, and assist in emergencies.

Comply with safety standards.

Provide incident feedback.

Assist with administrative duties.

Complete and submit the Train Journal.

Qualifications & Experience:

Grade 12 with Pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science.

Must be at least 21 years old and 1.6m tall.

Pass medical, psychomotor (Vienna Testing System), and fitness assessments.

Willing to undergo Train Assistant certification (theory and practical).

Competencies:

Knowledge: Locomotive classes, shunting procedures, safety regulations (SANS 3000, OHS Act).

Skills: Coupling, train handling, problem-solving, communication.

Attributes: Safety-conscious, punctual, shift-work compliant.
