Learner Technician Requirements

SCADA FIELD SERVICES

Successfully completed National Diploma (S4) in Electrical Engineering (related field) or outstanding in-service training.

TELECOMS

Successfully completed National Diploma (S4) in Electrical Engineering (related field), outstanding in-service training, or National N Diploma.

ENGINEERING

Successfully completed National Diploma (S4) in Electrical Engineering (related field) or outstanding in-service training.

ELECTRONIC SECURITY SUPPORT SERVICES (ESSS)

Successfully completed National Diploma (S4) in Electrical Engineering (related field), outstanding in-service training, or National N Diploma.

HIGH VOLTAGE

Successfully completed National Diploma (S4) in Electrical Engineering (related field) or outstanding in-service training.

ADVANCED DISTRIBUTION MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (ADMS)

Successfully completed National Diploma (S4) in Electrical Engineering (related field) or outstanding in-service training.

PROTECTION PERFORMANCE AUDIT AND SETTINGS

Successfully completed National Diploma (S4) in Electrical Engineering (related field) or outstanding in-service training.

ENTERPRISE ASSET MANAGEMENT (EAM)

Successfully completed National Diploma (S4) in Electrical Engineering (related field) or outstanding in-service training.

Key Performance Areas

Conduct SCADA pre-commissioning testing, maintenance, audits, and fault repairs on Power System RTUs.

Maintain telecommunication systems (fibre, copper, microwave, radio, GSM, and network configurations) for electricity infrastructure.

Plan and design HV/MV/LV distribution systems, manage projects, and handle customer connections.

Maintain access control, intrusion alarms, CCTV, electric fences, and fire alarms for electricity infrastructure.

Operate, repair, and maintain 11-132kV substations (switchgear, transformers, batteries, cables, and overhead lines).

Update, troubleshoot, and correct the digital system controlling the Power Distribution Network.

Extract and present historical network performance data for operational and planning staff.

Audit Power System Protection equipment to ensure compliance with performance and quality standards.

Manage electrification projects for informal settlements and LED retrofits for streetlights.

Conduct cable fault pre-location, identification, and pre-commissioning tests on LV/MV cables.

Manage Overhead to Underground projects and consumer relocation requests.

Monitor condition of switchgear and plant equipment.

All Applicants Must:

  • Hold a valid Code B driver’s licence.
  • Reside in the Cape Metropole.
  • Be eligible for registration with ECSA as Candidate Technicians (responsible for annual ECSA fees).
